EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CHOOSING A MOBILE PATROL SERVICE

MOBILE SECURITY PATROL SERVICES EXPLAINED

In this article we will explain:

HOW A MOBILE PATROL SERVICE WORKS

Mobile Patrol VehicleA Mobile Patrol Service is a type of Security Guard Service in which the Security Guards utilize some type of vehicle (Car, Truck, SUV, Golf Cart, Mountain Bike, etc.) to conduct their patrol rounds of a specific property or multiple properties.

Generally the Mobile Patrol Officer will conduct "Rounds", also known as "Patrol Hits", of their designated property or properties by conducting perimeter checks looking for crimes in progress, trespassers, vandalism, safety hazards, etc. In some cases, depending on their contracted duties, will perform lock/unlock services, internal patrols, alarm response, safety and well being checks, and parking management.

Usually the Mobile Patrol Officers "Rounds" are conducted at random "Time" intervals, such as every 4 hours, 3 times a night, between 9pm - 6am, etc. The days, hours, and amount of patrols are generally set by the client and included in the contract.

THE BENEFITS OF A MOBILE PATROL SERVICE

Generally the two basic benefits of a Mobile Patrol Service are:

  1. The Price.
  2. The large amount of physical coverage an Officer can effectively patrol.

Save MoneyWe typically believe that price should never be the leading factor when selecting the type of Security Guard Service you need, but we do understand that certain budgets only permit limited expenditure, and in specific cases a Mobile Security Patrol Service can somewhat be effective.

Currently, as of 2017, the price of a typical Mobile Patrol Service here in the San Francisco Bay Area, Oakland, San Jose, Fremont, San Mateo, and the Sonoma County Santa Rosa area, range from $12-$17 a "Patrol Hit" or for a "Flat Monthly Fee". Expect a monthly Gas and Vehicle Maintenance Allowance to be included as an extra fee to the service (Current detailed pricing estimates can be found here - Pricing for Security Guard Service). There are also varying factors that can affect the price as well such as, high crime areas, time of day, geographical patrol route, amount of patrols needed, time spent at each site, duties of the officer, etc. It really all depends on what needs to be protected, the city where the property exists, the time of day, etc. For example; The Nightly Mobile Patrol of an elementary school in Santa Rosa would most likely be way cheaper in cost compared to the Mobile Patrol of an antique storage warehouse in Oakland.

ARMED VS. UNARMED MOBILE PATROL SERVICES

Armed SecurityThe decision on whether or not to utilize an Armed or Unarmed Mobile Patrol Service will greatly be determined by discussing it with your Security Company. Generally speaking (and we use the term generally very loosely), something like patrolling an apartment complex, Mobile Home Park, an HOA, or Conducting a Neighborhood Patrol, should be done in an ARMED capacity for the mere fact that the Security Officer will be protecting human lives when a necessary deadly threat exists. Your Security Officer should have the capacity to stop a deadly threat, whether that be from an animal or a human, and have that necessary capability to defend and protect both themselves and you! Now if you just need a Mobile Patrol Service to conduct some property checks on some wood at a construction site, or a bunch or warehouses, then it would probably be safe to elect for an UNARMED Mobile Patrol Service. It really all depends of what and who needs to be protected.

  • Armed = Protecting: Human lives and Animals, occupied dwellings, high-end name brands, jewelry, computer components, marijuana dispensaries, animal shelters, etc.
  • Unarmed = All should be considered unoccupied of any persons or animals: buildings/warehouses, construction sites, schools, restaurants, parking lots, etc.

PROS AND CONS OF A MOBILE PATROL SERVICE

Pros:

  • Lower cost compared to an On-Site Security Officer standing post
  • Large area of Patrol coverage
  • Multiple sites can be protected
  • Lock/Unlock Services
  • Response to alarms and or calls from residents when patrolling neighborhoods, HOA's, Apartment Complexes, etc.

Cons:

  • Not a very effective form of protection (Guards only drive by your property, or remain onsite for several minutes and then leave and don't return for hours until their next patrol. This leaves your property greatly exposed during this time defeating the purpose of any real protection)
  • No physical Officer on-site to prevent crimes in progress, or to assist with immediate medical emergencies.
  • Slow response time to alarms or calls for service. (Greatly depends on Officers distance from location at time of call)
  • Not very effective as a visual deterrent
  • Clients generally don't think of the additional price they get charged for monthly Gas and Vehicle Maintenance Allowance. (A Security Company may charge as low as $12 for each Mobile Patrol of the clients property, but an additional $800-$1200 a month for Gas and Vehicle Maintenance Allowance. Expect that to be the norm when selecting this type of service.)

DO YOU NEED A MOBILE PATROL SERVICE?

This question all depends on what needs to be protected, do you have more than one location that needs service, size of the property or properties, what the duties of the Officer are, reason for your security needs, and of course budget.

For example:

If there are 6 schools in a particular district that you are requesting nightly service for when they are unoccupied and closed, then a Mobile Patrol Security Service would be a very viable option and would be much-much more cheaper than hiring a Security Guard to physical stand post for each individual school.

Another great mobile patrol option would be for the patrol of MULTIPLE property sites like warehouses, parking lots, Apartment complexes, and generally large areas of coverage.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A MOBILE SECURITY PATROL SERVICE

Your Mobile Security Patrol Service will most likely be utilizing some type of motor vehicle such as an SUV, Truck, or Car. It will, and should, have all the Security markings of the Company you've hired. In California, according to the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), the agency that oversees the licensing requirements of all California Security Companies, the Company Security Vehicle should have the following 3 items displayed on the Patrol Vehicle:

  1. The "Name" of the Security Company
  2. The "PPO" License Number (The Security Companies License Number)
  3. The words "Security Patrol", or "Private Patrol" displayed on the vehicle.

The Mobile Security Patrol Service will conduct random Security Patrol Rounds of your property driving around the perimeter or through your property looking for safety hazards, unauthorized open doors and windows, trespassers, loiterers, vandals, or any other crimes in progress. Depending on the service you've selected and the duties of the Officer, they may perform other functions such as locking and unlocking of common areas and facilities, responding to calls for service, alarms, parking control, vacation watch, and or additionally physically walk around your property as well. The amount of time spent on your property will be determined by your specific needs and the duties of the Officer. A simple vehicle perimeter patrol may take anywhere from 5-15 minutes depending on the size. Whereas a full external and internal patrol may take 20 minutes. If the Officer has to park and physically walk around, respond to calls, write parking tickets or tow vehicles, the Officer may be there over an hour. It all depends on the needs of the Client, the duties of the Officer, and the current duty they are performing.
